Noise Awareness Checklist for Health Professionals

Protect patient privacy and create a calmer workplace.

What You’ll Learn

Noise in healthcare environments can impact patient wellbeing and staff performance. Use this checklist to quickly assess your clinic or hospital and take steps toward a quieter, safer, and more comfortable environment.

Answer these questions to see if noise is affecting your healthcare environment:

  1. Do you need to raise your voice to communicate with someone about one metre away?

  2. Do workers notice a reduction in hearing over the course of the day?

  3. Do workers complain that it’s too noisy or that they can’t hear instructions?

  4. Do workers experience ringing in the ears or sounds seeming different in each ear?

  5. Do any long-term staff appear to be hard of hearing?

  6. Do patients complain about too much noise, e.g., they can’t sleep?

  7. Have patients mentioned they can hear other people’s conversations?

Tip: If you answered “yes” to any of these, it’s time to carry out a noise assessment to improve patient health, privacy, and staff working conditions.
