Noise Awareness Checklist for Education

Simple questions to help identify noise issues in your classroom.

What You’ll Learn

Classroom noise can affect both teaching and learning. This checklist helps you spot potential problems so you can take steps to create a calmer, more productive learning environment.

Answer these questions to check if noise is impacting your classroom:

  1. Do you need to raise your voice to be heard by someone sitting nearby?

  2. Does your hearing feel reduced by the end of the day?

  3. Do students complain that it’s too noisy or they can’t hear instructions?

  4. Do you notice ringing in your ears or sounds seeming different in each ear?

  5. Has your hearing declined since you started teaching?

  6. Do you need headache medication during the day due to noise?

Tip: If you answered “yes” to any of these, it’s time to carry out a noise assessment to improve your teaching and learning environment.
