Healthy Hearing

Understanding decibel levels and protecting your ears

What You’ll Learn

  • <60 dB – Quiet / Healthy Hearing
Whispered conversations, suburban nights, or a humming fridge. Hearing damage is rare.

  • 60–70 dB – Conversation is Easy
Open-plan offices. Normal conversation is possible, but excess noise can affect health.

  • 71–80 dB – Must Speak With a Raised Voice
Vacuum cleaners, music in small auditoriums, or a loud phone tone. You need to raise your voice.

  • >80 dB – Extremely Loud
City traffic, train stations, chainsaws, or lawnmowers. Prolonged exposure may damage hearing.

  • >125 dB – Pain Begins
Conversation is nearly impossible, and exposure can cause immediate discomfort or damage.

Decibel Levels and Their Effects

Noise affects more than comfort – prolonged exposure can impact your health. Knowing your environment’s sound levels helps protect your hearing.
