Controlling sound for more comfortable, functional music spaces

Acoustic treatment for purpose-built drum rooms at Murray Conservatorium of Music

Drum rooms are naturally loud, high-energy spaces. They have to be! Yet without the right acoustic treatment, the sound from percussion instruments can become overwhelming – not just for the person playing, but also for those nearby. What can be done to preserve both a drum room’s core purpose and the sanity of people living and working in close proximity?

The challenge

At the Murray Conservatorium of Music, two drum rooms required acoustic upgrades to reduce internal reverberation and control sound spills between rooms. The aim was to create a more comfortable and functional space for students and teachers, while minimising disruption to surrounding areas.

The Avenue solution

Avenue Interior Systems supplied and installed durable, impact-resistant Calando Acoustic Panels, designed to absorb sound reflections and reduce reverberation.

Each panel measured 2400 mm x 1200 mm and was cut to size on-site to fit the available space. Featuring a plain white base, the panels featured a coloured fabric face in Chalk colour to blend seamlessly into the existing rooms. The Calando Panels were installed in a combination of 25mm and 50mm thicknesses to combat a wide range of frequencies.

All adhesives, handling, and delivery were included, and the professional Avenue team completed installation during standard business hours to avoid unnecessary disruption.

Calando Panel specifications:

  1. 25mm thick: NRC 0.85 – absorbs 85% of reflected sound
  2. 50mm thick: NRC 1.00 – absorbs 100% of reflected sound
  3. Group 1 Fire Rated and impact resistant – ideal for education settings

Results achieved by Avenue

After installation, both drum rooms showed noticeable improvements in sound quality. Echo and reverberation were significantly reduced, allowing for clearer communication, more accurate practice, and a more enjoyable teaching experience overall.

By treating both the walls and ceilings, the rooms became quieter internally, with less sound escaping into neighbouring spaces. The solution provided by Avenue helped create more focused, functional spaces, where music can be explored without noise getting in the way.
